Context

Educapital sits where education meets finance: it's an edtech and fintech company that works with schools. Its business runs on three operations with zero room for error: issuing, collecting payments and measuring portfolio risk, school by school. When the product is financial, software isn't a back-office tool. It is the business.

The challenge for Educapital

To grow, Educapital needed its own core to handle issuance, payments and portfolio risk for many schools at once, with the traceability any financial operation requires. With off-the-shelf software, the business model would have to bend to fit the tool, and every new school could turn into a separate project.

The hypothesis

If the transaction core is built as SaaS from day one, onboarding a school becomes a configuration, not a new build. That lets the company add schools and transactions without growing operations at the same pace, and show investors a platform that scales.

What we did

  • Supported the platform's ideation with Educapital's team: our discovery and requirements process turned issuance, payments and portfolio risk into prioritized user stories.
  • Designed the UX/UI for every operational flow so each task had a clear, verifiable path.
  • Built the custom SaaS transaction core with issuance, payments and portfolio risk modules sharing one source of data.
  • Worked in Scrum for 12 months with our nearshore team in Bogotá, shipping in sprints and re-ranking priorities at the end of each cycle.
  • Documented requirements and reviewed every release with Educapital under DataLab's ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management system.
  • Set successful transactions per month as the north-star metric for platform adoption.

Results for Educapital

Within 12 months, the platform grew to serve 50+ schools and process 80,000+ successful transactions a month. The core also became a business asset: it helped Educapital raise more than USD 5 million. For a fintech, a measurable, growing operation carries real weight in investor conversations.

What we learned

In fintech, the platform is part of what investors buy into. A proprietary core with clear metrics from the start doesn't just organize operations; it tells the growth story with data.
