UTMédica: a custom diagnostic imaging SaaS handling 5,000+ transactions a week
Over 18 months, DataLab built and evolved the SaaS platform that centralizes diagnostic imaging management for UTMédica, a Colombian diagnostic imaging provider. The platform now processes more than 5,000 diagnostic imaging transactions a week and grew in stages, at the pace the operation required.

Context
UTM – UTMédica works in diagnostic imaging, a healthcare service where every study produces information that has to be available, complete and organized for whoever needs it. In this kind of operation, technology can't be an extra step; it has to be the place where the work happens.
The challenge for UTMédica
When images and their data live in different places, every lookup costs time and every hand-off between systems adds risk. UTMédica needed a single platform to manage its diagnostic images centrally, ready for thousands of transactions a week and able to evolve with the operation.
The hypothesis
If imaging management is centralized in a SaaS platform built around UTMédica's real workflow, weekly volume can grow without losing control over any study, and every new improvement reaches the whole operation at once.
What we did
- Ran our discovery and requirements process with UTMédica's team to map each diagnostic image's journey from start to finish.
- Designed a custom SaaS platform for centralized imaging management around the process, instead of forcing the process into a generic tool.
- Built it in Scrum sprints with our nearshore team in Bogotá, and kept evolving the platform alongside UTMédica's team for 18 months.
- Used weekly imaging transactions as the metric that shows platform adoption and capacity.
Results for UTMédica
After 18 months of joint work, the platform processes more than 5,000 diagnostic imaging transactions a week, all centralized in one system. The project didn't end with a single hand-off: the platform grew in stages, at the pace the operation required. For UTMédica's team, that means managing imaging from one place instead of jumping between tools.

What we learned
In healthcare, software has to support operations without disrupting them. Building in stages and tracking weekly volume is the safest way to grow a platform that can't afford to stop.
